Satellite Network Simulation

Satellites around world medSatellite Networks, including those from Intelsat, Eutelsat, Inmarsat, Iridium and Globalstar, put a lot of “stress” on applications not experienced in WANs or Mobile Networks. This is not due to failures of these services, but rather the very nature of satellite communications. Whatever the waveband (S, C, X, Ku, K, Ka etc.) there’s no getting around that the signal has to pass through the atmosphere (some 22,236 miles or 35,786 kilometres each way for GEO satellites) which may be highly moisture laden or other interference may be encountered.

This “stress” results in:

  • Application Performance Issues
  • Slow Response Times
  • Timeout Failures

By performing Satellite Network Emulation, using iTrinegy’s Network Emulators, these satellite conditions can be reproduced without satellites, terminals or satsims, and so application issues can easily and inexpensively be located and eliminated, before customer delivery.

In general when looking to test applications over any type of network the first thought is to use the network itself - the “real network”.  This approach has some general problems and some specific satellite problems:

  • Real Satellite networks, used for testing, are not usually realistic due to being unloaded
  • You cannot control a real Satellite network and put it into a particular condition e.g. poor weather, loaded, competition for access
  • It isn’t possible to mimic the load or atmospheric conditions in a real satellite network to perform retesting
  • Satellite Network Services are prohibitively expensive to replicate for testing

iTrinegy’s satellite network emulation can controllably and repeatedly produce all the basic characteristics that cause application issues in satellite networks e.g.

  • Bandwidth Limitation
  • Congestion
  • High Latency
  • High Jitter
  • Bit Errors
  • Queuing
  • Packet Loss
  • Quality of Service

Settings are easily adjustable for different satellite services like Inmarsat Global Xpress (GX), different technologies like VSAT, as well as different satellite orbits like GEO, MEO and LEO and control of different loading, congestion and conditions.

Depending on our product model, between one and hundreds of Satellite links can be configured simultaneously and failover scenarios reproduced, like the switch from one waveband to another when quality is poor. All our models can graph network statistics for many hours and log them for many months.

Additionally with Ethernet connections there is no need for expensive satellite modems or terminals and satellite eliminators (satsim) combinations.
