Organizations are increasingly realising that applications which work well in their LANs may well perform badly in other network environments e.g.:
- New consolidated data centres (hosted or not) where corporate offices now access servers over the WAN
- Customer environments over which they have no control

iTrinegy has created its INE Network Emulator family of products to allow the re-creation of these networks so that applications can be properly tested or assessed to ensure that they will work in the real environment.
INE Companion is a unique adjunct to our INE family of Network Emulators. It is designed to answer the question "What are the characteristics (bandwidth, latency, loss etc) of our own network links so that we can create a realistic emulated environment in application development and testing purposes?"
INE Companion is unique because it analyzes the network characteristics by profiling actual network traffic - a much more effective technique than using SNMP based information and ping data.
INE Companion has a dual role capability. It has applicability in both Live and Test environments:
- While profiling the network traffic to extract network characteristics it is also able to offer very powerful reporting on the network traffic by ip address, groups of addresses, application types etc.
Thus with the INE Companion used in the live network environment we can profile the existing network, create emulation "scenarios" for our INE Network Emulator family and use its reporting to investigate traffic flows and response times. The latter can be used for troubleshooting and capacity planning.
- With the INE Companion used in the emulated test environment it can offer superior reporting on traffic flows and response times during testing. In addition to this, its traffic generation, replay and capture features offer the ability to provide load to the emulated environment

The rackmpount version is ideal for organizations that wish or need to permanently profile networks carrying high volumes of applications traffic.
INE Companion Live! is supplied on a Live CD which means it can be used to transform any standard 64-bit machine (laptop, desktop or rackmount) into a powerful network profiling appliance. Being highly portable, it can be moved between live and test environments , or even sent to remote sites (via download or post) to enable other users to profile their traffic there.
